Golf

• Golf is a sport where individual players or teams play a small ball into a hole by a stroke or many successive strokes, using various golf clubs on a golf course. You start play at the teeing ground
• The aim of golf is to hole the ball in as few strokes as possible. The score is kept based on how many strokes the player takes to hole the ball
• Golf has been played for several centuries in Great Britain
• It is increasing hugely in popularity among young people
• The teeing ground is the area in which you must 'tee off' your ball - it is the starting place, marked by two tee markers
• You hit the ball at the teeing ground, and once the ball comes into rest, strike it again. You repeat this process until the ball eventually comes to rest in the hole
• The golf course is the large landscaped area for playing golf, which consists of a series of holes
• A hole means both the hole in the ground into which the ball is played and the total distance from the teeing ground to the green
• The green is the area surrounding the actual hole
• Some holes are more difficult than others
• Most golf courses are nine or 18 holes
• The holes are played in the order of the golf course layout
• Many holes include hazards such as water hazards or bunkers to make the game more difficult and varied
• Players have a set of golf clubs which each have a slender shaft and a head of wood or iron
• A golfer is allowed to carry up to 14 clubs during a round
• There are four major categories of clubs - woods, hybrids, irons and putters. There are also wedges, which are like irons
• If you want to learn to play golf, you may have private lessons, join a golf school or you can practice your hits on a driving range
• The world's biggest golf tournament is the Ryder Cup.

• There is a full calendar of amateur and professional golf organised by both the Welsh Golfing Union and the Welsh Ladies Golfing Union
• There are over 150 golf courses in Wales, including Tenby, Llandudno, Whitchurch (Cardiff), Monmouth, Vale of Llangollen, Prestatyn, Creigiau, Borth & Ynyslas, St Deiniol, Padeswood & Buckley, Aberystwyth, Ashburnham, Aberdare, Wenvoe Castle, Royal Porthcawl, Cowny (Caernarvonshire) and+ Pyle & Kenfig
