Fishing

  • Angling is one of the most popular forms of recreation in the world
  • People fish from the shore and from boats, for game fish - a fish that is prized for the sport involved in catching it
  • Fishing equipment, called tackle, comprises a rod, a reel, fishing line, and hooks and lures
  • Because tackle is inexpensive and finding a place to fish is easy, almost anyone can fish. The sport provides a source of fresh food, and anglers also enjoy the time spent outdoors
  • Fishing may be done in fresh water or salt water
  • Freshwater fishing takes place in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams, and game fish in these waters include trout, bass and many other species
  • Saltwater fishing occurs in oceans, estuaries, and tidal rivers, and game fish found in these waters tend to be larger than average freshwater fish, such as tuna
  • With nearly 750 miles of varied coastline Wales has something to offer any sea angler. The coarse fisherman is truly spoilt for choice in Wales with still water, canal and river fisheries of note

Fishing license

  • If you are aged 12 years or over and want to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in Wales, England (except the River Tweed) or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland you must have an Environment Agency rod licence
  • If you are caught fishing without a license you can be fined up to £2500
