Steroids
Anabolic steroids are prescription drugs that are used to treat anaemia and muscle weakness.
They are not the same as other steroids used to treat problems such as asthma and eczema. The other names for anabolic steroids are Deca-Durabolin, Dianabol and Stanozolol, these are the trade names. Anabolic steroids can be tablets or liquid for injecting.
This type of steroid is used by some athletes and bodybuilders because of its performance enhancing properties.
The effects of these drugs can also be to make the user train harder and recover faster from hard exercise as well as making them more aggressive and help to build muscle mass if used with a tough exercise programme.
Although the body will not become addicted to anabolic steroids when you stop using them you can become depressed and tired as your mind may have become dependant on them.
Included in the risks are:
- For men you may grow breasts, have erection problems, your testicles may shrink and you may become infertile and start to have acne
- For women you may get menstrual problems, grow facial hair, your breasts may shrink and your voice may become deeper
- Taking anabolic steroids when you are young can stop you growing properly
- Other effects include mood swings, confusion, high blood pressure and trouble sleeping
Anabolic Steroids are class C prescription drugs and are not illegal. Possession and importing anabolic steroids to supply to others, including friends is illegal and can mean up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.
