Music

Performing and listening to music is very rewarding and good fun. You can perform on your own, with a group of friends in a band, or even as part of an orchestra

Learning to play an instrument

There is a huge range of musical instruments you can learn - there is sure to be something for you. If you want to, you can take music exams to show how much you are learning.

Popular instruments include:

  • Piano
  • Flute
  • Violin
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Guitar
  • Drums

Many schools offer music lessons, and they may have a school band or choir which you can join. There are also many organisations that can help.

Buying music

Most people will want to buy music they hear, and there are many ways you can do this. You can now buy music from many supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda, as well as high street stores such as HMV and online retailers.

When you hear a song you like, you can either buy just the song (the single) or the album it was taken from, which will have on it many more songs by the same artist.

Downloading music

Many young people in Wales are buying their music by downloading it from the internet. Downloading music is perfectly legal as long as it is you pay for it and don't then pass it on to other people. If you download illegally or fileshare you will face fines that could run into thousands of pounds.

Websites that allow you to download music legally include:

  • Amazon MP3
  • Bleep
  • HMV
  • iTunes
