Witnesses

You may have been witness to a crime or have information about a crime.

In order to help the police to secure the prosecution of some criminals they need people to come forward and give evidence.

  • You may be asked to give a statement of what happened and you could be asked to appear in court
  • If you are under 16 one of your parents or your guardian must attend the court with you
  • If you are under 14 you will not be asked to give evidence under oath. Being under oath means that you have to swear to tell the truth or only say what you believe to be the truth
  • Being a witness in court can be difficult and even distressing if you are the victim of the crime that is being prosecuted however there will be people to assist and support you

For helpful and informative details about being a witness go to the Victim Support website.
