Personal Safety
Although the media gives the impression that our streets are getting more and more violent the probability of being attacked when you are out in towns, cities or the country are low. However it is essential that you are aware of the dangers and that you take sensible steps to protect your personal safety.
The following are precautions that you should consider:
- Plan ahead especially on a night out and tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back
- If you are travelling on public transport sit near other people or the driver
- Book taxis from reputable firms and try to travel with your mates, not alone
- Try not to drink too much as it will cause you to become less aware of any dangers
- Do not meet up with people you do not know on your own, and always meet in a public place where there are lots of people about
- Stay alert and keep your possessions such as mobile phones, purses and wallets hidden
- When walking keep to well lit footpaths
- Be alert, and look and act confidently, a confident person is less likely to be the victim of an attack
- Park your car in a well-lit street
- At home always ask anyone who calls to show you their ID and if you are in doubt do not let them into your home
- Also think about your own behaviour when you are out, is something that you are doing making someone else feel nervous and frightened?
