Types of Holiday

If you are planning a holiday, there are unlimited options for you to choose from depending on what type of holiday you would like to go on.

  • Popular holiday types include activity and adventure trips, sight-seeing or tours, cruises, city breaks and weekend breaks, long term travelling and inter-railing
  • If you are looking for a stress-free break, a package holiday is ideal, but if you are looking to be more flexible you can book your own travel and accommodation to suit you and where you want to go

Package Holidays

  • If you are looking for a trip where everything is arranged for you, then a package holiday is a safe and easy way of visiting another country
  • The cost of the holiday usually includes flights, accommodation and transfers from the airport
  • You can choose your accommodation from bed and breakfast, all inclusive (all meals, drinks and snacks included), full board (three meals per day included), half board (some meals included) or self-catering (no meals included)
  • You will be appointed an English speaking holiday rep who will be on hand throughout your stay to guide you and advise you
  • You can book a package holiday at a travel agent or on the internet but make sure you shop around for a good deal

Independent travel

  • If you want more flexibility on where you travel and where you stay, you can make your own arrangements
  • There are various ways you can get to your destination including by plane, sea, rail or road
  • You can book travel and accommodation through a travel agent or on the internet. These days there are a number of websites where you can find cheap accommodation and travel separately

Travel by air

  • Booking flights over the internet is usually the cheapest way of getting to your destination
  • Most flights ask you to check in at the airport two hours before your flight. If you are late, you will not be allowed to board the plane
  • You will only be allowed to take a certain amount of luggage with you so pack carefully
  • For more information go to the Air Travel section

Travel by sea

  • Travelling by boat can be a better option depending on where you are going
  • Ferry travel may work out cheaper than a flight
  • Cruises are also a great way of seeing a number of different destinations in one holiday
  • Got to the Boats section for more information

Travel by rail

  • Rail travel is a popular means of getting around, particularly across Europe
  • In some countries you may have to book your tickets in advance so make sure you find this out before you go
  • The InterRail pass can work out as a cheaper method of rail travel - see the Trains section for more information

Travel by road

  • If you wish to drive a car abroad, you will need to plan ahead and find out the rules for drivers in your chosen country
  • Hiring a car can be a great way of getting around and seeing a country. It can also work out cheaper if you are travelling long distances
  • Driving in a foreign country can be unsettling to start with, so familiarise yourself with the highway code
  • For more information see the Cars section
