Keeping in Touch

You can use your mobile phone when you are abroad, check with your provider for details of how much it will cost before you go. It might be worth taking out a separate contract or deal to make it more economical.

  • Using your mobile phone abroad can be expensive. Many countries have phone cards you can buy from shops and post offices which can often be a cheaper way of making phone calls
  • In some countries such as the USA, a different frequency to mobile phones in Britain so your phone may not work there
  • It is a good idea not to rely on your mobile phone as not all areas will have network coverage. You could also lose your phone on your trip
  • When you ring Britain from another country you will have to change the 0 at the front of the number to +44
  • E-mail is a great way of keeping in touch, and it can be very cheap. Many towns and cities have cyber cafes where you can pay for internet access by the hour
  • See the section on Communications in Living Abroad for more advice
