Woodlands

  • It is important to remember that the delicate balance of life found in our woodlands should be respected, and to take care whenever visiting them not to leave any litter or disrupt the surroundings

  • There are 3,876 acres of protected woodland in Wales, as well as many other wooded areas which you can visit

  • Woodlands have been around for thousands of years, but they now cover only two per cent of Wales and need our protection

Wildlife

  • There is a huge variety of wildlife in Wales which you can explore, much of it in woodland environments

  • If you are interested in wildlife, there are many surveys of animals and plants you can get involved in. Your local wildlife trust should have more information about this

  • Wales has several endangered species. Some of these are very well known such as the Red Kite, but others are less well known, such as the Freshwater Crayfish

  • The Snowdon Lily is a variety of flower unique to Wales, and is very rare. It is found only in a few places within Snowdonia National Park, and its numbers are dwindling

  • The Red Squirrel is particularly threatened in Wales, due in large part to the destruction of their native habitat by human expansion, and the creation of more broad leaf forests (planted with trees like oak which loose their leaves in autumn) which are more suited to the grey squirrel
