Pets

  • Many young people have pets at home. They are a good way of teaching you how to look after and care for other creatures
  • Pets need a lot of care and attention so you must be sure you have time for one before you choose to have one
  • Animals such as dogs and horses take a lot of time and energy to look after, so make sure you have thought about this before you decide which pet you would like
  • You should also make sure other people in your house are happy for you to have a pet as they can often take up a lot of space and make a lot of noise
  • The most common pets to have are cats, dogs, hamsters, goldfish, rabbits and birds, but some people have more exotic animals such as lizards or parrots
  • There are strict laws about bringing animals into Britain to be sold as pets. If you buy an exotic pet you must make sure it has proper documentation, and was not brought here illegally
  • It is also worth considering that more exotic pets are often more expensive to keep. Reptiles need a lot of space to move around in, an area to live in adapted for their needs, and a very specialist diet
  • You should consider the costs involved in having any pet. Most animals, like humans, will become poorly at some stage and will need to be taken to the vet, which can be expensive
  • You should also consider how much food for your pet will cost before you decide to have one
  • If you are thinking of getting a pet you should go to a local animal shelter like the RSPCA, or a reputable pet shop - ask a vet if you're not sure. This will ensure your pet is in good health and has been properly looked after

When walking a dog, make sure he does not pull ahead of you, pull him back untill he gets used to it. Give him a treat as a reward when he does something right. Make him/her sit when waiting for something, like waiting for trafic lights or letting another dog go past.

hope this was helpful :-)
