Welsh Baccalaureate
The Welsh Baccalaureate is a qualification for 14 to 19 year old pupils and students in Wales. It combines existing qualifications like NVQs, GCSEs and A Levels with personal development skills.
These are skills that are valued and recognised by universities and employers and can offer you wider experiences than the normal curriculum.
The qualification is offered at Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced levels and can be studied in English or Welsh, or a combination of the two languages.
It consists of two parts - a compulsory Core and a choice of Options, which are made up of optional subjects or qualifications which you might be taking in school.
The Core subjects are the same for all three levels and consist of:
- Essential Skills Wales/Key Skills qualifications (Exact requirements depend on the level followed)
- Wales, Europe and the World (WEW)
- Personal and Social Education (PSE)
- Work-related Education (WRE)- work experience and a team enterprise activity
- Community Participation
- Language Module
- Individual Investigation (Exact requirements depend on the level followed)
The Welsh Baccalaureate can be started in school at Foundation or Intermediate level and continue through to college where you complete the Advanced level.
The option of working towards the Welsh Baccalaureate will be discussed with you when you are considering your Year 9 choices.
