Young people in Wrexham recently took part in a ‘Come Bake with Me’ competition as part of Wrexham Youth Services Healthy Youth Club programme.  The competition provided young people with a great opportunity to show off their skills and talents in the kitchen and enhance their confidence and knowledge of cooking.

Each young person was given one hour and 30 minutes to prepare a dish of their choice.  The young people had researched the recipe of their choice in advance of preparing it on the day. The dishes made included an Apple Crumble, a Jambalaya, Valentines Pop Tarts and Banana Muffins.

During the day the young people also learnt about the importance of ‘hand hygiene’ and what makes a healthy meal.  Lunch was prepared by the young people and this included a toasted tortilla wrap with fruit. The afternoon session focussed on being creative and making fruit bouquets.

The competition was judged by Jonathan Miller, Health & Well Being Manager and Kerry Jones, the Advanced Practitioner for Wellbeing, with Sophie being the star performer and was awarded 1st place for her fantastic ‘Jambalaya’. Sophie received a goody bag of prizes that included recipe books and cooking equipment.

Jonathan said ‘It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying themselves and learning about healthy eating in a fun way. The standard of entries was excellent and I have no doubt that some of the young people will go on to be very good cooks in the future.’
