What is bullying?

Bullying can happen to anyone at any age and can include:

  • being called names

  • being teased

  • being pushed or pulled about

  • having money and other possessions taken from you or messed about with

  • having rumours spread about you

  • being ignored and left out

  • being hit, kicked or physically hurt in any way

  • being threatened, intimidated or attacked possibly because of your religion, gender, sexuality, disability, appearance, ethnicity or race.

Bullying does not have to take place in person it can happen online for example.

Bullying can also be part of other forms of abuse, including neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

Possible signs of bullying

Children may for example:

  • feel ill in the mornings

  • begin truanting

  • begin doing poorly in their schoolwork

  • come home regularly with their clothes or books destroyed

  • become withdrawn, start stammering and  lacking in confidence

  • become distressed and anxious and  stop eating

  • have unexplained bruises, cuts and scratches

  • become aggressive and unreasonable

  • cry themselves to sleep and have nightmares

  • attempt or threaten suicide

How can you protect yourself from being bullied?

  • Don’t ignore bullying – it won’t go away on its own and it may get worse.

  • If you try to fight back, you may make the situation worse or get yourself into trouble.

  • Instead tell someone that you trust – such as a teacher, parent, youth worker, school counsellor or friend.

  • If the person you are telling doesn’t seem to understand don’t be put off – tell someone else.

  • If you speak out about it, there are people who care and they will listen to you and help you.

  • You could also phone a helpline or visit a website, because some people find it easier to send a letter, email or text.
