Brymbo, Coedpoeth and Tanyfron Youth Clubs

On the 15^th August 32 young people from Brymbo, Coedpoeth and Tanyfron got on a bus at 6.00am, that’s right 6 in the morning to be part of a community cohesion project organised by the youth workers of Brymbo (Rich and Mandy).

As you can imagine everyone was shattered, I have never seen people eat so much rubbish in one day. All the young people had sweets, energy drinks and packed lunches most of this was gone by 8 when we stopped in Hereford for a cuppa and a little break, most of the young people took the opportunity to get more sweets.

Our first stop was The Big Pit in Blaenafon where we went on a underground tour of the mine, it was amazing. We went down in the miners caged lift 90 meters armed with a hard hat and a miners light our tour guide Alan talked to us about welsh cold and the different materials mined out of Wales, Welsh coal was used to fuel to Titanic.

As we went further into the mine we talked about the dangerous gas that could be in the mines and how doors where used to split the mine into sections to stop gas spreading these doors years ago where staffed by children as young as 6, The Mines and Collieries Bill was passed by Parliament in 1842. The Act prohibited all underground work for women and girls, and for boys under 10. Alan talked about how years ago miners used canaries to see if there was gas, they used them because of their colour as they where easy to see, years ago miners used candles as light which caused loads of explosions.

We also saw where the pit ponies where looked after, this was also a hard life form them as they never saw daylight and suffered from the same health difficulties miners had The Coal Mines Regulation Act of 1887 contained the first national legislation to protect horses working underground.

We then walked further into the mine where one youth worker was dragging her hard hat along the ceiling of the mine as it was quite low and the other couldn’t reach the hand rail. It was a really good experience and a good laugh all the way round, definitely a place to visit if you have never been.

Back on the bus to Cardiff now everyone still eating sweets, couldn’t believe they didn’t bring any sour sweets! Down in Cardiff we visited Cardiff Bay the Senedd and Wales Millennium Centre where we had a photo mission to complete taking pictures which where on a list. We then moved to visit the Millennium Stadium for a tour only to find out during the tour that the grass the best rugby team in the world plays on is imported from ENGLAND! Shocking. We went into a mock changing room where an inspirational talk was played on the speakers it was that good myself and Mandy where ready to play for our country. We walked out of the players’ tunnel, visited the VIP lounges and sat in the highest seats of the stadium singing the Welsh national anthem it was awesome.

We had a meal in a restaurant alongside more sweets and a MacDonald’s on the way home, how people where not sick on the bus home is amazing.

It was a great day out and we are all off to London in September and I can’t wait.
