• The Rugby World Cup is the most important international rugby union contest in the world
• The prize for winning the event is the William Webb Ellis Trophy, named after the pupil of Rugby School who is reported to have invented rugby
• The event was first held in Australia and New Zealand in 1987 and takes place every four years
• There is a two-year qualification process
• The host country usually hosts the competition in several stadiums
