Money from parents and carers

Some parents and carers choose to give their children pocket money so they can buy things for themselves.

How much pocket money you get depends on what your parents or carers decide you should have. It might also depend on how much they think you deserve to have. For example, you might get less for not doing the chores or for behaving badly and you could get more for being very good.

Some young people get pocket money for doing things for their parents or carers, like cleaning their rooms, doing the washing up, clearing up the garden or running errands like picking up the shopping.

You might also get pocket money from relatives like an auntie or uncle or your grandparents. Some young people don't get any pocket money from their parents or carers and this is completely normal too. Pocket money is not a right, it is a privilege.
