Card Protection

  • Card protection is offered by banks and loans companies to protect your cards against several risks
  • It is not compulsory to have card protection, so don't feel pressurised into taking out cover if you are unsure
  • All credit cards offer fraud protection. For example, if someone stole your credit card number and use it illegally online or over the phone, you will be protected and not liable for paying back that money

Paying by credit card can give you valuable legal protection if the company you’re buying from goes bust or doesn’t deliver what it’s promised, and you may be able to claim a refund from the credit card company.

You may also get some protection when paying by debit card under a voluntary scheme. With charge cards you don’t generally have protection.

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI)

  • This covers repayments of a credit card, loan or mortgage in the event you lose your income due to illness, an accident or redundancy
  • Some policies can also cover theft and fraudulent use of your cards
  • Carefully check your policy, as many illnesses aren’t covered, only cover a specific debt and usually don’t start for 90 days

You might have heard of Payment Protection Insurance (PPI), as it has been mis-sold to millions of people. If you think that you’ve been mis-sold PPI, check some of the links below.
