  • The Heritage Lottery Fund was set up by Parliament in 1994 to give grants to a range of projects that involve the national heritage of the United Kingdom

  • The Heritage Lottery Fund is funded by money raised by the National Lottery and currently of every £1 spent on a lottery ticket, 28p goes to the Heritage Lottery Fund

  • The grants given out by the Heritage Lottery Fund are distributed evenly between five categories:

    • Arts

    • Charities

    • Health, education and the environment

    • Heritage

    • Sport

  • Grants vary in amounts from £500 to multi-million pound grants depending on the scale of the project

  • Lots of people can apply for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund from small community groups to churches and councils, as long as a project involves the conservation of heritage or enables the public to have better access to heritage

  • Projects in Wales that have benefited from Heritage Lottery funding are the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, Aberystwyth University and the regeneration of Colwyn Bay town centre
