Cadw

  • Cadw is the Welsh Assembly Government's historic environment division. Its aim is to promote the conservation and appreciation of Wales' historic environment

  • The name Cadw comes from the Welsh word 'to keep'

  • Cadw is responsible for the presentation and promotion of Wales' heritage and its duties include:

    • Securing the preservation of ancient monuments and historic buildings

    • Grant aiding the repair of ancient monuments and historic buildings

    • Managing the 127 ancient monuments in Wales

  • There are Cadw projects across Wales which you can visit free of charge

The National Trust

  • The National Trust works to preserve and protect the coastline, countryside and buildings of England, Wales and Northern Ireland

  • The National Trust differs from Cadw because it is a charity and relies solely on donations, membership fees and revenue raised from commercial ventures for its funding

  • The National Trust was established in the 19th Century to protect British buildings, parks and coastlines against the effects of urbanisation and industrialisation
