When you leave school, education doesn't have to be about going to college or university - you can study from the comfort of your own home through distance and e-learning programmes (they might also be called home-study or correspondence courses).
- Distance learning and e learning are becoming very popular, as you can study from your own home, on your own PC and in your own time
- It gives you the chance to gain higher level qualifications whilst combining your learning with other work and family responsibilities in a flexible way
- The downside is that it requires a great deal of self-discipline and it may take significantly longer than going to university full time
- Some courses offer the opportunity to be assessed (tests or exams) and gain a qualification and some are more hobby based - so you can learn purely for enjoyment or for a qualification
- Some distance courses operate using the postal system (where they send you coursework, you complete it and post it back for assessment) whilst other E-learning or online courses use the Internet and e-mail
- These days many distance learning courses use a combination of postal and Internet based materials and assessment
- Although not the most common choice for 18 year olds, this is an option you may want to consider
