Notice

Most workers have the right to be given notice if their employer wants to stop their employment.

Your legal rights depend on how long you have worked for your employer and should be outlined in your terms and conditions or contract of employment. As a guide you are entitled to:

  • One weeks notice when you have been working for your employer for between one month and two years
  • One weeks notice for each whole year you have worked, if you have worked for your employer for between two years and twelve years
  • Twelve weeks notice if you have worked for your employer for twelve years or more
  • In addition to these legal rights you may also have further rights provided by your contract of employment

Notice you must give your employer:

  • The minimum amount of notice you must give is one week when you've worked for your employer for one month or more
  • If your contract of employment requires you to give more notice than one week then you should give it i.e. most employment where you are paid monthly require you to give one months notice
