Eighty young people from Wrexham are to take part in the Big Welsh Walk which takes place on 3rd November as part of this year's Youth Work Week.

They will follow Offa's Dyke from Selattyn on the Oswestry Border to Moel Famau in Flintshire - a walk of 40 kilometres.  They will be in 8 groups of 10 and each group will walk 5 kilometres.

The Big Welsh Walk 2012 will follow the Wales Coastal Path and Offa’s Dyke Path –an impressive 1,047 miles (1,685 kilometres)– with young people walking their county’s section of the route. Youth workers from the 22 Welsh local authorities and the Council for Wales of Voluntary Youth Services will join them in their challenge.

The walk takes place during Youth Work Week and highlights the huge range of council-backed and voluntary youth activities and support services that benefit nearly 300,000 young people across Wales every year.  8,000 of these young people are from Wrexham.  The services help young people as they change from children to adults and from dependence to independence.  During Youth Work Week special events will be held across the country to encourage more youngsters to get involved in activities in their area.

Cllr Mike Williams, Lead Member for Children's Services and Education, said:

"This is a marvellous opportunity for Wrexham's young people to be involved in such a unique event.  It will celebration the excellent work undertaken by our youth services and celebrate the achievements of the young people themselves.  I hope the weather does not bring any problems and that they all enjoy the event."

Craig Mathews, who is organising the event on behalf of Wrexham's Youth Service, said:

"Young people often get bad publicity for the behaviour of the minority and this is an opportunity for them to shine - they are all looking forward to the event and to taking in the beautiful scenery and celebrate their successes and those of the youth service."

The Wales event is coordinated by Monmouthshie Youth Service in partnership with youth services across Wales and in association with the Council for Wales of voluntary Youth Services and the Welsh Local Government Association.

The Big Welsh Walk 2012 takes place on Saturday 3 November.  For more information or to get involved visit your local youth centre or contact craig.mathews@wrexham.gov.uk
