Post 16 Transport
Wrexham County Borough Council currently organises and pays for transport for students aged 16 to 18 attending colleges (such as Coleg Cambria) as well as those attending sixth forms at secondary schools (such as The Maelor School Penley, Ysgol Rhiwabon and Ysgol Morgan Llwyd). Transport is provided for those who live more than three miles away from their school or college.
Post 16 Transport is a discretionary service meaning that we are not required to provide the service by law. The current annual cost of this service is approximately £400,000. Wrexham Council is facing a significant reduction in grant funding from the Welsh Government. This means that the Council has to change the way services are provided and there will be reductions in budgets and services across the Council.
The Council is proposing to change the Post 16 transport policy. The proposed changes would take place in September 2016 and therefore affect students starting Post 16 education in or after September 2016. They would not affect current students or those who are starting college or sixth form in September 2015. Neither would they affect students who live less than three miles from their school or college as they do not currently qualify for free transport.
The consultation is intended to inform everyone who would be affected by the changes what options are being considered. It will give everyone an opportunity to express their views on the options and say how the changes could affect them. The consultation will inform decisions about changes to the Post 16 transport policy which will be taken by elected members in April 2015.
