Benefit Cap
As part of recent welfare reform (changes), there is now a limit on how much benefit can be claimed in total.
This will affect everyone aged 16 - 64 years old who makes a claim.
The cap applies to the total amount that your household receives of the following benefits and will apply to Universal Credit when it arrives where you are.
The limits on how much can be claimed are:
- £350 a week for single adults who don’t have children, or whose children don’t live with them
- £500 a week for single parents whose children live with them
- £500 a week for couples (with or without children living with them)
There are some exceptions to the benefit cap if you qualify for:
- Working Tax Credit
- Employment and Support Allowance, if you get the support component
- Attendance Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment
- Industrial Injuries Benefits (and equivalent payments as part of a war disablement pension or the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme)
- War Pension, War Widow’s Pension or War Widower’s Pension
