Neighbourhoods And The Community

When you move into a new house, you may also be moving into a new neighbourhood.

It can seem daunting at first because you might not know anyone or where anything is.

• A good place to start in getting to know your neighbourhood is getting to know your neighbours. Introducing yourself to your neighbours is a good way to make friends and they will usually be happy to tell you more about the area, like where the nearest shop is or what day the bins are collected
• If you want to get more involved in the community, you could find out what is happening locally. You can look in local shop windows, the local library or community centre for adverts for forthcoming events in your area. It could be that you want to join in with an exercise class, a social group, a mother and toddler group, a church group or even a book club. This is a great way to make friends and learn more about the community you live in
• Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are also a good way to introduce yourself to your community and ensure that someone is looking out for you and your home
• Your neighbours will be a big part of your life in the community so it will be important that you get on with them. Remember to respect your neighbours and try and keep noise or disruption to a minimum
• If you are suffering with noisy neighbours, try approaching them politely. Most people don't even realise they are making too much noise and will stop when asked. If the problem carries on, keep a record of the noise events and how they affected you and try writing to your neighbour expressing your concerns. If there is still no improvement, contact your local Environmental Health Agency for advice. You can get their number from your local council
• If you or your neighbour are a tenant, contact their landlord and make a complaint
