Trains

Trains are a reliable way of getting around Wales, the UK or abroad.

In Wales

  • Unlike buses, trains only travel on main routes so consider how you will get from the station to your destination. You might need to walk, catch an additional bus or a taxi
  • Most train services offer day tickets, monthly tickets and more, including ‘open returns’ meaning that you decide when you are planning to return within a specified period
  • If you book your tickets in advance they can be a lot cheaper but make sure you check whether your ticket is only for ‘specified train only’. If so it means that if you miss the train for whatever reason you will have to buy another ticket
  • Some trains these days offer Wi-fi so you can use your phone or other devices and connect to the Internet. Some also have power sockets so that you can charge your phone etc
  • If you know you’re going to be making a train journey it’s a good idea to check timetables so you don’t have to wait at stations for long periods of time. This is particularly important if you will be travelling at night for your own personal safety and make sure you tell someone what time you expect to catch the train and when you will be arriving home
  • TravelineCymru is a really useful website that helps you to plan any journey from or around Wales, giving details of trains and buses and also tells you how far you might need to walk between connections Go to Traveline Cymru

Around the rest of the UK and Europe

  • Trains are a cheap way of getting to places in the UK and Europe, and although the journeys can be long you get to see a lot of places along the way
  • You can catch a train to Europe using the Channel Tunnel
  • If you’d like to travel around Europe by train, you can get an InterRail pass – this is a ticket that allows you unlimited travel in and between countries. For more information please go to Innerrail
  • If you are already in another country and want to get a train to another place, its a good idea to book your tickets before you go as it might be cheaper than doing be it when you arrive. You can book on the phone or via the Internet
